Our Classrooms / Our Akomanga

As children journey through their years at Whakamārama School, they follow a pathway of awareness and understanding that is deeply reflective of the school’s name and kaupapa. This pathway is not just a metaphor, but an intentional, layered approach to learning that is rooted in the concepts of tūrangawaewae (a place to stand, belonging) and the unique identity of the local environment and people.

At Whakamārama School, each classroom is named after a local native bird. This is more than a naming convention; it is a deliberate strategy to connect our children with their tūrangawaewae and to build their knowledge of local ecology, history, and culture.

Rūma Pīwakawaka / Years 1-2

One of the smallest birds, yet full of energy. Like the pīwakawaka, we capture the essence of boundless potential with our learners. Each flutter of curiosity stirs the air, awakening seeds of new ideas that wait patiently to sprout. In our learning community, we nurture these seeds—providing sunlight of encouragement and rain of inspiration—so that new ideas may emerge, take flight, and flourish. Just as the pīwakawaka dances through the forest, agile and ever-curious, so too do our learners explore, discover, and grow, embracing the limitless possibilities before them.

Rūma Toutouwai / Years 2-3

Like the rare and inquisitive Toutouwai – the North Island robin – our learners are deeply engaged in refining and shaping their ideas. Their thinking is alert and adaptive, with concepts continually tested, reshaped, and sharpened through reflection, just as the Toutouwai moves with agility among the forest branches of Puketoki. Curious and considered, they explore creative possibilities before bringing their visions to life.

Rūma Tūī / Years 4-5

Like the tūī, the ocean now meets the land for our learners. Concepts are beginning to crystallise into concrete reality. Their ideas and plans are being brought into existence. They are taking their place in the world. With each step forward, they echo the song of the tūi - bold, unique, and full of promise. The shoreline, once a distant horizon, is now beneath their feet, grounding their aspirations in the sand of experience. Where once there was only the ebb and flow of possibility, now there is the steady construction of knowledge, the tangible shaping of dreams.

Rūma Kārearea / Years 6-8

Like our rare Kārearea, gliding high about the bush, our learners are encouraged to set their sights beyond the immediate horizon - aspiring to goals that may seem distant, yet within reach through focus and determination. The preparedness to fly fast and hunt with precision, characteristics of the kārearea, reflects the readiness and confidence our learners need to pursue their ambitions and move confidently into the future.
