Our Place

Welcome to Whakamārama School

Whakamarama School, nestled in the rural heart of the Western Bay of Plenty, boasts a rich history spanning over a century. Established in 1914, it has served as a cornerstone of community education, fostering generations of students.

Whakamārama School is a full primary (Years 1-8) set on elevated, attractive grounds north of Tauranga. Our school roll is drawn mainly from surrounding lifestyle properties that includes a nearby bush reserve. The majority of our children live within the immediate neighbourhood. It is a safe, welcoming and highly desirable place to raise a family.

The school enjoys strong traditional community support and celebrated its Centennial in 2014. Students and families benefit from the partnership with the kindergarten, which is situated next to the school. Shared activities support students as they transition from kindergarten to school.

Our school is on a sustainability journey. Through exploration, discovery, and connection with the environment, our students learn to make decisions and take action that improve the physical and social well-being of our places, our community, and our world.

The school and its grounds are open to the public, offering a spacious green area for recreation. Facilities available for both school and community use include a community hall, playground, fitness trail, outdoor musical instruments, and a tennis court.

High expectations for student wellbeing and success are shared by the school community. Families and whānau actively support education and school activities. With students who are generally healthy and engaged, teachers are able to focus on learning. The school provides a range of creative, extracurricular activities and targeted support programmes.

The relationship between school and our parents, caregivers and whānau is crucial. Parents. caregivers and whānau take an active interest in our school and are visible in a range of activities both in and outside the classroom. A sense of family and community is an important aspect of Whakamārama School.
